Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a range of services to enrolled students without charge on a short-term basis. The services are intended to facilitate intellectual and personal growth by helping students to resolve concerns that may interfere with their academic progress, social development, and satisfaction at Edinboro University. There are a variety of concerns that students may encounter while attending college such as relationship difficulties with friends, roommates, family members or romantic partners; stress, anxiety, or nervousness; lack of self-confidence or low self-esteem; depression; eating disorders; sexual concerns; impaired academic functioning; and uncertainties about personal values and beliefs. Individual counseling is most commonly provided by CAPS to address such concerns. Appointments Appointments are requested and can be made in person or by phone. At times CAPS may employ a waiting list for services. Same-day requests for assistance will be honored based on scheduling availability. Most often, appointments will be weekly and last about fifty minutes. However, some students find their needs met during the initial consultation and require no further services. Our telephone number is 732-2252.
During each semester, CAPS' office hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Additional times may be requested. During the summer, CAPS closes at 4:00 PM. Counseling and Psychological Services is centrally located on campus in the Ghering Health and Wellness Center. Top of Page Programs Each semester several different psycho-educational programs are offered to enhance student development. Some topics previously presented include: Effective Communication Skills, Breaking Up: How to Cope, Date Rape Awareness and Risk Reduction, and Cultural Diversity. Multi-session workshops on topics such as assertiveness training and anger management are also offered periodically. Requests to present on a topic of interest to student groups and organizations are welcome. Groups
Support and psychotherapy groups are designed for students with common concerns to help one another by sharing information and experiences. Previous groups have focused on building self-esteem, eating concerns, and issues related to interpersonal relationships and communication. Referrals Referrals are provided for outpatient and inpatient psychological services with other providers, agencies, and hospitals (such as Saint Vincent Mental Health Center, Millcreek Community Hospital, and Meadville Medical Center) and also for outpatient evaluations and specialized treatment (drug and alcohol treatment, rape crisis center, etc.). Referrals will be offered upon request or when deemed necessary and appropriate. On- or off-campus referrals can be coordinated by CAPS. However, students may contact other agencies or campus services directly at any time.
While most CAPS services are scheduled by appointment, there are crisis situations that require immediate or same-day intervention. Such a crisis might involve considering suicide or experiencing a physical or sexual assault, for example. Crisis intervention services are offered during regular office hours. 732-2911 (Edinboro University Police) Erie County 456-2014 (Crisis Services/Safe Harbor Behavioral Health) Crawford County 724-2732 (Crisis Hotline/Meadville Medical Center)
All services provided by CAPS are strictly confidential. Information you share in counseling or generate through testing is not disclosed outside CAPS without your written permission. Only in rare instances do exceptions to confidentiality occur such as when a student poses an immanent threat of serious harm to self or others.
