Career Development Article

Career Services offers developmental guidance and counseling to college students for career planning and job search.  The five major steps of career planning include:  1) researching careers, 2) developing contacts, 3) gaining exposure and experience, 4) developing marketable skills, and 5) learning job seeking skills.  We have prepared this page to acquaint you with Edinboro University Career Services so that you can encourage your student to explore our resources and services.

Some facts from Edinboro Career Services you might find of interest: 

- Information is available 24 hours a day on the Web at www.edinboro.edu (click on Career Services).
- Of the students in a typical Edinboro graduating class, a high percentage find jobs of their choice in Pennsylvania.
- Career Services provides individualized assistance to students to identify or verify their choice of major.

Parents' Tips:

- Encourage good grades and informed decisions.
- Conduct career research and develop a plan.
- Become involved in campus activities.
- Use your expertise and contacts when advising your child.
- Remind your children to make full use of university resources.
- Encourage students to develop qualifications in addition to a college degree, such as, grades, relevant course work, extracurricular activities, marketable skills, work experience/internships, job seeking skills/effort, and contacts.

Counseling

Career Counseling:  In depth assistance is provided for students who want to clarify career direction or determine occupations of interest.  DISCOVER, a computerized guidance program, and other assessment tools help define career preferences.

Practice Interviews:  During simulated interviews, verbal and nonverbal communication skills are critiqued.

Resume and Cover Letter Critiques:  A career or student advisor reviews the content and presentation of resumes and job-search correspondence.

Workshops:  Programs to assist with career planning, developing job-search skills, and applying for graduate and professional education are offered regularly. The basic job-search series covers resumes, cover letters, interviewing, job-search strategies, summer jobs, and internships.

Information Services

Career Library:  A comprehensive collection of books, directories, and videotapes is available to help students research career options and identify potential employers. The library is located in 106 McNerney Hall.

Employer Information:  Annual reports, company literature and profiles, videotapes, and brochures supplied by firms that recruit on campus help students research employers and prepare for interviews.

Connecting with Alumni

Information Interviews:  The Alumni Career Connection is an online resource that enables students to obtain career advice from alumni and other professionals working in diverse fields.

Alumni Forums:  Alumni participate in career panels, career days, on-campus recruiting, employer career fairs, and information sessions to help students establish contacts and learn about specific career fields.

Graduate and Professional School Applications

Advising and Programs:  Services are offered on the application process, including personal essays, exam study guides, sample admissions tests, and registration materials for national tests. Directories of graduate study are also available.

Graduate and Professional School Days:  Representatives from over 100 schools offer information and advice on programs of study and application procedures during Graduate and Professional School Day in October.

Credentials Service:  Files can be established to maintain confidential letters of recommendation and other appropriate materials. Contents of the files can be sent later in support of applications for employment or admission to graduate or professional school.

Online Listings of Jobs, Internships, and On-Campus Recruiting Visits

Jobs:  A listing of jobs is updated daily, providing job descriptions and application information for regional, national, and international employers.

Summer Jobs and Internships:  Short-term positions, both on campus and off campus, that can help students clarify career options and gain valuable career-related experience are posted.

On-Campus Recruiting:  Employers conduct interviews with students for summer and full-time employment.    

Employer Information Sessions:  These sessions are organized by employers to introduce students to their companies. They provide a forum for job seekers to meet potential employers and for undergraduates to learn more about a particular employer or career field.

Other Employment Services

Employer Career Fairs:  Career fairs offer on-campus forums to network, gather information, and meet employers.
