Curriculum Committee FAQs

What needs to be included in a curriculum proposal?

It depends on the type of proposal. The following outlines a complete proposal:

New Courses

The catalog description, course outline, bibliography, course objectives and assessments are attached to a pink curriculum proposal coversheet. This paper proposal is accompanied by an electronic copy (all components above including coversheet combined into one electronic file per proposal).

Course Revisions

The revised catalog description, course outline, bibliography, course objectives and assessments are attached to a blue curriculum proposal coversheet. Attached to the revised proposal is a copy of the original course outline. This paper proposal is accompanied by an electronic copy (all components above including coversheet combined into one electronic file per proposal).

Program Revisions

The revised curriculum checksheet and the original curriculum checksheet are attached to a green curriculum proposal coversheet. This paper proposal is accompanied by an electronic copy (all components above including coversheet combined into one electronic file per proposal).

New Program Proposals

The new program document should contain the information requested in the document Suggested Format for New Academic Program Proposals provided by the State System of Education. This paper proposal is accompanied by an electronic copy (all components above including coversheet combined into one electronic file per proposal).

Distance Education Proposals

The course syllabus addressing distance education issues and a copy of the course outline are attached to a yellow (web or itv) proposal coversheet. This paper proposal is accompanied by an electronic copy (all components above including coversheet combined into one electronic file per proposal).

Proposals arriving at the curriculum committee that are incomplete are not reviewed until they become complete. Electronic copies are absolutely essential in efficiently distributing materials to committee members for review.

How long does a proposal take?

Again, it depends on the type of proposal. The approval path of each type of proposal is identified below:

New courses and course revisions

department -> dean ->graduate dean (if appropriate) -> dean's council -> curriculum committee -> provost -> president

Program Revision

department -> dean -> graduate dean (if appropriate) -> dean's council -> curriculum committee -> provost -> senate -> president -> board of trustees. A new program must also go to the Board of Governors in Harrisburg.

Distance Education (web and itv)

department -> dean -> graduate dean (if appropriate) -> curriculum committee -> provost

You may expect the proposal to be at each stage a minimum of 3 weeks. If the proposal has problems, it could potentially take longer. It is vital that if the proposal has problems, that you address the issues immediately.

Can I fast-track course revisions and what can be considered fast-track? What is the process?

Course revisions may be fast-tracked. Fast-track revisions are those that involve minor changes - i.e. prerequisite changes, minor editorial changes to the course description, course name changes and bibliography changes. Any change to the course outline and major changes to the course description will not be considered on the fast-track.

The process involves presenting the proposal for a department vote and signature of the department chair. The original proposal is sent directly to the Chair of the Curriculum Committee accompanied by an electronic copy of the proposal (in one file). A copy of the paper proposal is sent to the appropriate academic dean.

Can a program revision be fast-tracked?

No. That option is no longer available.

How often does the University-wide Curriculum Committee meet to review proposals?

The UWCC meets every two weeks (usually on Wednesdays at 3:00pm) to consider curriculum actions. The subcommittees (Courses, Programs and General Education) meet on the "off" Wednesdays to review their respective proposals.
