LIVING/LEARNING COMMUNITY
The Science, Management and Technology (SM&T) Living and Learning Community is designated for those students majoring in Biology, Business, Health Services, Computer Science, Chemistry, Geosciences, Math, Nursing, Physics, or any Science/Math discipline within Secondary Education. Eligible students who choose to live in the Living and Learning Community are choosing to live in a communal setting that fosters group identity and cohesiveness within the major courses of study dealing with the sciences and mathematics. This affords an atmosphere in which students with similar academic interests can share ideas and resources, creating a web of academic and emotional support.
Students gain, through increased exposure, a greater scope and integration of the sciences and mathematics. In addition, the Living and Learning Community facilitates interactions with faculty and staff outside of the classroom, increasing opportunities for tutoring and mentoring in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.
Activities such as study sessions, career development seminars, field trips, coffee hours, movie and fun nights, and other Science, Management and Technology-sponsored programs that may be of interest to, and developed by, the residents take place throughout the academic year.
Throughout each semester, the Community invites speakers such as recent graduates, graduate students, professionals and others involved in the field within SM&T, allowing for student interaction with people relevant to students' courses of study.
In short, the SM&T Living and Learning Community provides a place where students with interests in science and mathematics can not only study together but actually live together.
MIND MATCH
The annual Mind Match is held in the Spring Semester in the Benjamin Wiley Arts and Sciences Building. This competition is held between all the Living/Learning Communities on campus. This fun competition helps fuse the Living/Learning floor philosophies of academics, camaraderie, and administrative support.
Each community sends at least one team, four members, from their floor to answer the game show style questions prepared especially for them. Dr. Marc Sylvester serves as master of Ceremony for the evening. The event is a round robin to give each team a fair chance of winning the coveted, travelling plaque and pizza party for their Living/Learning floor. Everyone has a great time but it is hard not to shout out the answers from the audience!
