Supported Technology
Technology and Communications periodically reviews the availability of service and support on University hardware and software. The current list can be viewed below. If an item is not on this list, it suggests that the item is no longer supported by the vendor, does not have spare parts available or they are inordinately expensive, requires specialized expertise that is not available, or has security issues. Contact Mr. Dennis Bradley at bradley@edinboro.edu or x1030 with questions. This was last updated in January of 2007.
HARDWARE*
Computers
-Desktop or Laptop Computer requirements: Pentium III 800 mhz processor with 512mb of RAM or above
-Apple Macintosh requirements: G4 processor or above with 512mb of RAM or above
-All other computer models are not supported unless some specific agreement has been made between the party using the system(s) and Technology and Communications; such agreements must be in writing and are the responsibility of the department to obtain.
Printers
-Only recommended HP Laser Printers are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the replacement cost of the printer.
-Only recommended inkjet printers under warranty are supported, any inkjet printer out of warranty is considered disposable and is not supported.
-Replacement toner cartridges, ink jet cartridges and paper are the responsibility of the department who uses the printer unless the printer has been placed on the University's print quota system. Technology and Communications is responsible for any printer supplies for printers residing on the University's print quota system. Technology & Communications reserves the right to review a request to add a printer to the quota system.
Scanners
-Only recommended Hewlett-Packard USB capable scanners are supported and only models not more than 5 years old are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the replacement cost of the scanner
-Some HP scanners are not 100% compatible with all the Apple products, other scanners such as the Epson or Nikon will be evaluated and supported if such a scenario arises.
Hard Drives
-Only recommended 8 gigabyte and larger hard drives are supported by Technology and Communications
Monitors
-Only recommended 17" and above CRT monitors are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the replacement cost of the monitor
-Only recommended 15" and above LCD monitors are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the replacement cost of the monitor
-In most cases, an out of warranty repair for any computer monitor will be reviewed and if a functional replacement monitor is available, one will be issued.
Memory (RAM)
-Memory chips are generally inexpensive and these are the responsibility of the department requesting memory upgrades. Due to the vast variety of models and types, consultation with Technology and Communications staff is required. Technology and Communications will provide the appropriate procurement information that will match the requestor's needs. Due to compatibility issues, it is not always possible to ‘add' memory; existing memory may have to be replaced.
Networked Equipment
Any device that is to access the campus network must contain all of the most recent anti-virus updates as well as the most recent operating system security patches and updates that we require and further be able to receive automated updates of these types. Otherwise, the equipment will not be connected to the campus network; equipment that is connected and fails to maintain these requirements may be blocked from the network.
Other equipment components
-Only recommended components will be supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the cost of a new or replacement component.
-In most cases it is possible that a replacement part may be available in Technology and Communications parts inventory, in which case the part will be replaced.
SOFTWARE*
This is a list of the commonly used software applications and their associated versions that we recommend and support. However, it is not an exclusive list as some of the staff members in Technology and Communications may use or may have used other software applications in which they may be able to provide consultation and troubleshooting. Please contact the helpdesk if you have support questions related to any software application.
Windows Operating System
-Only Windows versions 2000 Service Pack 4 and above and XP Professional with updated service packs and security patches are supported.
-Systems running other versions of windows must be upgraded to handle at least Windows 2000 SP4 or XP Professional before additional support will be offered.
-Updated patches to the OS are pushed out to all end users on a regular basis and it is important that end users have at least the minimal supported OS to ensure maximum security
Macintosh Operating System
-Mac OS versions 10.3 and above are supported
-Systems running other versions of the Mac OS must be upgraded to handle at least or 10.3 before additional support will be offered.
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher)
-Only Microsoft Office XP (2002) and Office 2003 or newer are supported for Windows systems
-Windows systems running other versions of Microsoft Office must be upgraded to handle at least Office version XP or 2003 before additional support will be offered.
-Only Microsoft Office 2004 or newer is supported on the Apple Macintosh system
Adobe and SPSS Products
(Support on the following Adobe and SPSS products is limited to supplying purchasing information and assistance with installation. Beyond these limitations, support on the use of the application is not available. Please note that Adobe Reader is fully supported.)
========================
-Acrobat Professional v6 and above (Note: we also recommend PrimoPDF for creating PDF documents)
-After Affects v6 and above
-Audition v1 and above
-Go Live v6 and above
-Illustrator v10 and above
-In Design v2 and above
-Live Motion v2 and above
-Photoshop v7 and CS
-Premier 6.5 and Pro (Windows Only)
-SPSS version 12, 13
Browsers
Internet Explorer
-Due to the security issues centered within IE, only the most current version of IE will be supported. Any older version should be upgraded prior to continued support. The upgrades are normally very quick and readily accessible. Note that on October 26, 2006 IE version 7.0 was released by Microsoft. Until we have fully tested this product and the manufacturers of our mission critical applications such as SCT Banner, Oracle, SAP and several others officially support this product we will not recommend its use.
FireFox version 1.5 and above
Safari version 1.3 and above
Please note that due to limitations on available resources for development and vendor restrictions, not all web-based applications will be available to all platforms or all browsers. Primary development will be for Windows based systems running Internet Explorer 6 or higher; systems for campus & public use developed after May, 2006 will include significant consideration for Firefox compatibility (for both Windows and Macintosh platforms), although this compatibility cannot be guaranteed.
CLASSROOM or AUDIO/VIDEO EQUIPMENT*
Video Projectors
-Only recommended models are supported with the condition that any repair costs do not exceed 25% of the cost of a new or replacement component.
-Video projector lamps for projectors will be replaced by Technology and Communications if the cost of the projector bulb warrants the effective value of the current projector.
-All repairs for any a/v equipment are outsourced to an external vendor through Technology and Communications
- If available, a replacement model may be temporarily installed while repairs are being made
Other Audio/Video equipment
-All repairs for any a/v equipment are outsourced to an external vendor through Technology and Communications
- If available, a replacement model may be temporarily installed while repairs are being made
- There are many varying types of audio/video equipment available in the world today and we can obviously only support a small percentage of these devices. Before purchasing any audio or video equipment, please contact our Video Communications Center or a Classroom Technology support person in Technology and Communications for advice.
- Any existing audio or video equipment will have to be examined before a determination of support levels can be offered.
- We are discontinuing support and depleting our inventory of all vhs equipment and will not support or provide any vhs camcorders for resource acquisition. We will continue to provide vhs players until these units fail or are no longer of use. We would strongly suggest that vhs material be converted to digital formats (according to applicable copyright laws) or repurchased in the appropriate digital format.
*Please Note: Routine maintenance and support for any recommended hardware or software on this list may be denied if it is determined that the financial and functional value of the item(s) is not worth the required resources.
